The Mentawai Islands are a true surfing mecca with many different regions on offer that host world famous waves such as: HT’s, Lances Right, Macaronis, Rifles, Greenbush & many more. It takes a good boat and experienced guides to discover empty lineups, hidden gems, stunning deserted beaches & awesome fishing spots – so come and jump onboard with us for a real surf adventure.
Saraina can cover over 400 nautical miles (740km) up and down the Sumatran coast, in search of the best waves and conditions.

After you arrive in Padang, we provide you transfers from the airport to the ferry and the ferry across to the Mentawai Islands where you new home aboard the Saraina awaits.
We operate around ferry times leaving from Padang to the Mentawai islands and return.
All meals are freshly prepared on board with a mix of local cuisine and some of your Western favourites. No-one goes hungry. With ample fridge and freezer space available on all trips, the drinks are cold and the food fresh and plentiful.
We can cater for nearly any dietary requirements, just let us know!
You won’t go thirsty with a full supply of fresh coconuts, soft drinks, tea, coffee, water and 2x beers a day, all included.
Have a taste for something special? That’s cool, there’s usually time for you to grab something for yourself in Padang before getting on your ferry and plenty of fridge and freezer space.
You’re new home away from home is called the Saraina. She is made from local Indonesian hard wood, has a dark coconut interior and is powered by a 360 HP turbo diesel which propels her to a cruising speed of 8.5 kts. Saraina has 2 generators on board which provides her with 240v power and has air conditioning through out for extra comfort. To see pics of the sleeping arrangements and more – Click here

What’s the Surf Tax all about? First things first. It’s included in your package costs.
The Mentawai Region Surf Tax was introduced by the local government in 2016, with the idea to give back to the community from the global surf industry the area attracts.
Once riders pay the ‘surf tax’, they are handed a wristband that they are required to wear and are allowed to stay for 15 days. We view the band as a positive way to contribute back to the local communities who continue to support the surf culture of the area.
Saraina is equipped with some fishing gear, although if you are a keen fisherman it’s advised to bring some extra gear plus your favourite rod.
We always troll as the boat is underway and do some drop line fishing when the vessel is at anchor.
Some of the fish in the waters around the islands include: Tuna, Wahoo, Travelly, Coral Trout,SpanishMackerel,Barracuda Marlin and Sailfish.
Snorkel gear is available on board for when you need to chill and have a break from surfing all day. Many of the surf spots we visit make for incredible snorkelling experiences. The islands are a part of the “coral triangle” with over 500 species of reef building coral and 300 species of fish, its recognised as part of the “Global centre of marine diversity”
These beautiful blue waters offer adventure both on top and under the water.
Flexible Start Locations!
Saraina is currently the only boat that is based in the Mentawai Islands. We start our trip from the islands (not Padang) and groups have the option to commence your trip at one port and finish in another.

The Waves!
The perfectly shaped reefs, light winds and consistent long distance swell ensure a variety of locations can provide more surf opportunities. Typically, waves vary in size from 3 to 12 foot with the average wave height being about 6 foot. In some areas, as many as 10 surf spots are located within 1 hour of each other. Areas like the Playgrounds offer a huge variety of world class spots to satisfy surfers of all levels.

For those groups wishing for even more of an adventure, we can start the trip further North or South and get involved in some real exploration. There’s still loads of rarely surfed, near perfect uncrowded waves to be found – slightly off the ‘beaten track’. Give us a call to find out more!
